Lost Carnival Mods ([personal profile] ringleaders) wrote2016-07-16 10:12 pm

20PT ITEM REGAIN (SIMPLE): A relatively small object collected from your homeworld that is either non-magical, or very simple in its purpose. Regular personal items such as books, tools, or other practical items are included in this category. Magical items must have one specific use, and can be nothing that would qualify as a significant power in their own right. For example, a mirror that specifically shows you one room only would be okay. A mirror that can show you any location you wish would not be.

40PT ITEM REGAIN (COMPLEX): An object collected from your homeworld that has a complex, functional purpose, created with either magic or technology. Things like computers, motorcycles, and enchanted clothes or jewelry would be included in this category, provided they don't qualify for the next one.

60PT ITEM REGAIN (DEADLY): Any objected retrieved from your homeworld, magic or otherwise, whose primary function is to inflict injury or death. A small dagger could be considered a simple regain, but swords, guns, bombs, poisons, and anything commonly associated with murder and which could easily inflict it will be part of this category. These are more expensive because the ringmaster generally requires more trust in a person to grant them such items, and will refuse to do so if your character has a bad track record.

30PT MAGIC ITEM (SIMPLE): A relatively small and simple enchanted item, bound to the same limitations as the "simple item regain" listed above, except it will either be created by the ringmaster or gifted to you from the carnival's private stores. Requests for these cannot be incredibly specific, as it is entirely reliant on what the carnival actually possesses, and so what you end up getting will probably be a bit of a surprise. The ringmaster will make the decision based on your character's more general request.

60PT MAGIC ITEM (COMPLEX): A magical item given to you by the ringmaster that is complex in its function or offers significant utility. The same rules apply as above, and the exact item given to your character will be up to the ringmaster's discretion. Items like skeleton keys that can open any door, or scrying tools that actually work would be included in this section.

80PT MAGIC ITEM (DEADLY): Any magical item given to you by the carnival which has the primary function of inflicting death or pain upon other creatures. The ringmaster is hardly a pacifist, but she won't just hand over this stuff to anyone, and will refuse to do so if your character has a bad track record.

20PT FAVOUR (SMALL): The ringmaster will provide you with a small favour in exchange for your built up good karma. These are things that are useful to you but do not cost her a significant amount of effort, like allowing you to borrow one of her belongings or assigning you a few cinder spirits to do your bidding for a while. These requests are judged on a case to case basis.

60PT FAVOUR (BIG): Any favour granted by the ringmaster that will require a significant amount of her time, such as teaching you a new skill or building something that you would personally find useful into the carnival's architecture. These favours are flexible in content, but will be judged on a case to case basis.

70PT REBIRTH (ONE USE): The only method through which a character can come back to life in Lost Carnival, is if they have previously made a deal with the ringmaster that will allow her to capture their spirit and resurrect their body. This cannot be bought after you have already died, as keeping your soul from departing requires a small ritual set up and commitment put in place before the death occurs. Once she has prepared said ritual, it will lay dormant indefinitely until your character happens to die, at which point she will be able to resurrect them in her own special way. This is only good for one use and will have to be bought again afterwards. Going through the resurrection will very likely result in a character developing a Rare Change.

40PT CHANGE (UNCOMMON): Your character straight up asks for the ringmaster to change them in a particular way. Of course, this is only gaining fae traits, and not getting rid of them.

60PT CHANGE (RARE): Your character asks for the ringmaster to change them, except it's something particularly major and rare.

40PT SPELL (SIMPLE): The ringmaster will teach you a single, simple spell that you will be able to use as much as your magical stamina allows. Previous magical knowledge is not necessarily required. For characters already experienced with magic, they won't necessarily have to go through the ringmaster to do this, and buying this reward will just be considered OOC permission to have the character figure it out, either instinctually or with active effort. Simple spells are basic cantrips, such as creating a light for yourself, lighting candles with your fingers, filling glasses with water magically, and other basic things.

80PT SPELL (COMPLEX): The same as above, except more complex and useful. This can be just about anything, though the cost of a spell may be adjusted if you are asking for something really flexible or significant. It is possible that a character could learn this themselves if they have a magical background, but please ask the mods before assuming. Otherwise, this will have to be taught by the ringmaster or other senior staff of the carnival. A complex spell basically amounts to having a new, flexible magical ability. A complex spell can grow out of a simple spell, and if you've already purchased the simple version of a technique you can pay off the rest of the 80pts to upgrade it to complex without having to start fresh.

100PT SPELL (DEADLY): The cost to be taught any spell that has the primary function of murder or warfare. The ringmaster doesn't teach this kind of thing to just anyone and, again, will refuse to do so if your character has proven to be worrisome. A complex spell can be upgraded to deadly by paying off the difference in points.

130PT MAGIC (AREA OF STUDY): This is a reward only available to characters with a history of magical study or research, or characters who are putting considerable effort into learning while in game. This represents a general understanding of a broader category of fae magic, as opposed to individual spells which gives a relatively specific ability. Those who have purchased a magical area of study can experiment within the confines of their subject, and create new spells related to the topic with enough effort.

Description: Fae magic is going to start accentuating Steven's existing empathetic abilities in order to concretely extend them to all life forms, as opposed to just gems. Essentially, this just means he'll be able to communicate emotionally with various life forms, to whatever degree they are capable of it. He won't be able to use this like a psychic attack - he can't enforce his emotions on other people, even if he can project them for the sake of communication, though he will potentially be overwhelmed by the emotions of other people in intense social environments. It will be harder to communicate this way the further he is from his target, and works best at close range.

Description: Area of Study: Shadow Magic!

I have no idea how much detail you want me to go into here re: "what shadow magic tho", but right now my idea for the first thing he figures out is stuff like shadow teleportation and retrieving items he knows are reachable via shadow through other shadows.

Expanding from there, future spells he could develop are things like a general control of shadows, creating shadow constructs (shadow people and shadow ravens, etc), semi-tangible shadow constructs (like tangible enough to trip someone up or, in the case of a shadow person, hold an object), maybe even being able to see through his shadow constructs? Or being able to stab a shadow and keep someone from moving due to it?

He does already have a knack for shadow-related magic, so I have a lot of ideas on where he could build on from there. Just need to know what my limits are.

For the simple item regain, Lambert will be requesting a copy of The History and Practice of English Magic written by one Jonathan Strange! He learned about the book's existence through the radio chatter. The book is mostly Strange being a nerd about English magic's history, not so much an instructional book, so I figured it wouldn't count as anything complex. Let me know if that's okay!

For the magical item, on the other hand, Lambert will be simply requesting "jewelry that does something useful for a Nightrider" because if he's going to develop a hoarding tendency for the stuff m he might as well turn it into something that has a purpose, dammit. He's thinking along the lines of something that can be used as a storage item (for swords or gear, blame the Pokeballs for that idea) or something that can be used to create a minor obfuscation/cloaking illusion when activated (thanks for the inspiration , Childermass) but whatever else she thinks is 'useful' is fine.

His only stipulation as to the nature of the jewelry is "nothing that goes on my prick or my chest."

Description: For the first one, Strange is going to present the Ringmaster with a list of ten or so books that he'd like. These are all books ABOUT magic, not books OF magic, so lots of stuffy English history or blathering on about theory or things like that, not 'here's a spell have at it.' One of the books is definitely A Child's History of the Raven King and a couple of them are books that Strange always wanted to read but never really got the chance to because Norrell is a book hoarder.

ETA BECAUSE I FORGOT SOMETHING, at least one or two books Strange requests are books about military strategy, specifically books about the peninsular campaign & war against Napoleon. I'm perfectly fine with them being like, books about how the campaign planned out in canon or how the campaign planned out in literally every other world that doesn't have magic.

For the magic item, he'll just request "something to remind me of Arabella" because Strange is a sap who misses his wife. Obviously he knows that since Arabella's currently trapped in the realm of a different fairy, then it'll have to be something that won't get in the way of stupid fairy politics. If asked for specifics, he'll ask for something like a picture of her or something that lets him hear her voice. He's requesting it as magic because the 1810s really didn't have much in the way of photography or voice recordings, so whatever it is, it'll probably be magical by default.

Gongenzaka is going to, following the much thought he had while waiting around his boss room to ponder magic and its transferring into other things between worlds, come before the Ringmaster and ask to learn a little in about the best way he can manage.

Which is to say, straight up face-on-ground bowing while going off on some overly honest minimonologue about how he came there to learn and hasn't been doing much good at allowing it/doing it (CoughAttemptsToSwimBeforeWalkingCough), that likely ends with something along the lines of "Therefore, I, the man Gongenzaka, must humbly ask you, Ringmaster...Please! Teach me not what I, the man Gongenzaka came to expect...but what I, the man Gongenzaka, must learn!"

HE GETS PRETTY EXTRA WHEN ASKING FOR GUIDANCE this is how he learned synchro summon y'know-

And this should leave him with like 9 points and plenty of time to get cozy enough with things to ~upgrade~ if the window ever comes, whoopwhoop.

Let me know if you'd rather this was noted in just the rewards post for the AU instead. I can move it. I am also assuming turning into a crow is going to straight up be a complex spell.

Description: Joker is going to be coming back from Portland with a brand new whole right arm, to which RM probably says about fucking time. However, it's going to be sort of based off of his (fake) angel form that he had in Portland, so it's sort of a custom change. If this is too #extra, let me know, and I can BS a different arm.

Joker's angel form was a featureless humanoid-entity with wings, seemingly composed of an almost aurora borealis-like light, as a reference.

His new arm will seem to be made of a transparent material almost like glass, making it completely see-through. Inside of his arm will be a strange kind of substance that gives the impression of space or the aurora borealis. (Maybe it'll change on his mood, because why not become a living mood ring, right)

Hopefully this visual makes sense.

Description: HELLFIREEEE. Carly's retaining the specialty she had as a Warlock-this is bolstered by her keepsake, an affinity for the magic. In this case, the techniques aren't far off from how she works with her own 'Demon Fire' either; the difference is in application.

Hellfire is, go figure, a lot more like Actual Fire than her demonic stuff; it has an added demonic flair to it that presumably strengthens it a touch against standard water while weakening it against anything angelic though. The fire can burn through most 'flammable' materials with a fair amount of ease (and by flammable I mean 'if it can melt, she can get to that point), but actually getting it to those temperatures is going to take a lot of practice...and she is by no means immune to her own flame.

(Really her best way to work her way through this is to balance it with the energy eating demon fire. One can curb the other! This will probably act as a nice power replacement for when she can't summon Aslla any more, hah)

TLDR when it comes to applications and 'spells', it's a study of fire magic at the end of the day, with the weaknesses/advantages skewing toward a more Demonic vs Angelic scale of things. Start with a fireball, work yer way up.
