In that situation I would encourage you to app them along with Rin as a companion/pet, if you are interested in having them around. In terms of very close companion pairs like this, we do like to give the player liberty to play both halves if that's something they are interested in doing, because finding a player for characters like familiars is usually not a practical expectation, and the focus is obviously on Rin in this case.
