Yes, veterans will come in with an AC reward or some equivalent for every year contract they've willingly signed on for - this means its important to consider how exactly your character ended up working here. If they first joined because they broke something or ended up in accidental debt, they won't receive anything for that first year. The same goes for if they've only stuck around due to continued debt, in which case they won't have received any rewards at all at game start.

Contract rewards are only for veterans that have signed year and a day contracts of their own volition, with no pre-existing debt. It's essentially what the character is gaining in exchange for a year of their labour. Contract rewards are given out up front in most cases, which means that a character who has been in the carnival for 2.5 years will have had the opportunity to earn three separate rewards:

1st from when they first joined.
2nd from the beginning of their second year, when they decided to continue to their term.
3rd from the beginning of their third year.

They don't need to have served the third year in full in order to have received the third reward, because that time has already been bought in advance. The maximum length a person could have been in the carnival for is 3 years, which means they would be negotiating a new contract sometime soon.

In terms of reward prices, for the purposes of contract rewards I would not take them too literally. There is no specific point limit, those are just ballpark ideas of the kinds of things they could have asked for. A character doesn't need to ask for one book at a time - their contract could have specified a list of books as payment for their work.

Alternatively, if your character is not very savvy, they could have signed on for a full year for something as simple as a sandwich or a high five. Whether or not they get their "money's worth" is not the Ringmaster's concern, but she is just as happy to give them something worthwhile if they ask for it.

You can also ask for things that are not specifically listed on the rewards page, though most things like that can be summarized under a "big favour." That would be stuff like helping you with homeworld problems or asking for powers, items or memories that your character has lost access to in their canon. The Ringmaster is a powerful sorceress and can do a lot of things as part of a "favour."

One thing they cannot do, however, is stockpile nebulous favours without specifying what they are for at the time of the contract being signed. The Ringmaster is no fool.
