I think I understand! In Shen's case it was a big old canon falling on him while he was on a boat, proceeded by an explosion of fireworks. I suppose in this case him darting out of the way and leaping off of the boat could have been missed, or maybe he did go down into the water and resurfaced outside of the carnival with the canon not passing through like the guards in your example?
