NPC DESCRIPTIONS (NEW)

NON PLAYER CHARACTERS
Lost Carnival has developed a pretty big roster of important NPCs over time, who get talked about a fair amount of show up to wreck everyone's shit on occasion. This is a list of the most need-to-know entities in the metaplot, whom you can expect to show up again.

MAJOR NPCS
The Ringmaster is the woman (fae) in charge, and can also turn into an enormous dragon. As it turns out, that dragon form is, in fact, her true form - she is a draco-phoenix, the Wyld Fae progeny of the Phoenix and the River Dragon. She is the leader of the carnival, and built it a few thousands years ago so that she and a band of employees could explore the multiverse together. Unfortunately, her past among the High Fae of Arcadia continues to haunt her, and has put everything she holds dear in danger.

Personality: Wild, boastful, and sometimes childish, the Ringmaster has a predator-like need to establish dominance and protect her territory. Despite this, she has harmless intentions, and can actually be quite kind. She has been softened by many years spent among mortals and considers the carnival to be the most important thing in her life.

Current Status: Leading the carnival's quest to find the Silver Mirror.

Ignatius, Lord of Conflagration is some poor Summer Court bastard the carnival mugged and kidnapped. He was first encountered in Portland, as one of the fae a few carnival members had found themselves the servants of. He turns out to be a frightening enemy during the end of that plot, and eventually turned up again as a warrior assigned to aid the Rose Queen with her quest to reclaim the Blue Rose. Unfortunately for him, a team of carnival members was able to use the reality bending magic of the Athenaeum to trap and interrogate him. Unable to safely release him, the Ringmaster had no choice but to bring him along as a prisoner.

Personality: A lifelong soldier and now a general of the Summer Court, Ignatius is a surprisingly stable individual for a fire elemental. He has a strong sense of honor and will never go back on an oath. He makes a fearsome enemy, but is actually quite gregarious and easy going when he has no reason to fight.

Current Status: Imprisoned by the carnival.

The Summer Maiden is the Ringmaster's age-old lover and friend. She rules the Summerlands, an occasional carnival rest stop and the home of a dissenting group of Summer Fae that broke away from Arcadia when the rest of faerie society refused to stop being such dicks all the time. She is the next in line for the Summer Throne, and without her the court is lacking an heir.

Personality: Grounded.

Current Status: Living in the Summerlands.

The Summer Queen is the ruler of the Summer Court. Not much is known about her besides the fact that she is terrified that the Ringmaster and the upstarts that followed her may kill her like they did the last Winter Queen. This has resulted in her trying to steal the Blue Rose back from the carnival, in order to quell the potential of a rebellion.

Personality: Paranoid.

Current Status: Ruling the Summer Court in Arcadia.

The Winter Queen is the Ringmaster's bitter ex-girlfriend. She was the Winter Maiden when the Ringmaster still lived in Arcadia, and the two of them fought against the Queens in an effort to create positive change. Unfortunately, this resulted in the two of them assassinating the Winter Queen and everything went downhill from there. Taking her mother's place, the new Winter Queen seems to be every bit as cruel as the old one, and has a personal axe to grind with the carnival to boot.

Personality: Cruel.

Current Status: Ruling the Winter Court in Arcadia.

REOCCURING NPCS

The Rose Queen is a high ranking Summer Court Fae and all around terrible person. She can be sweet and caring when in a good mood, but the warmth of her personality depends entirely on how willing you are to forsake your freedom and obey her every whim. She was the custodian of the Blue Rose forever ago, until a close friend betrayed her and stole it away. She's spent the rest of history throwing a tantrum about this, and has only recently expanded into throwing a tantrum about her missing halfblood son as well.

Personality: Ugh.

Current Status: In pursuit of the Blue Rose and her faeblooded son.

The Nightshade is an assassin of the Summer Court, and a pixie, which is another word for a lower class fae. After becoming trapped in Portland with the Rose Queen during the plot where they were first encountered, she has been forced to continue working for her majesty while she goes about finding the Blue Rose. Nightshade hates it, but she loves tormenting people who are weaker than her, especially if they are from the carnival.

Personality: Rude.

Current Status: Reluctantly serving the Rose Queen.

The Count of Crows is a high ranking fae of the Winter Court, and is only interested in the carnival so far as it will benefit his own goals. He was first encountered in Portland, and was ultimately the one to win the McGuffin game and initiate the ritual to break the barrier trapping everyone on earth. Unfortunately, he doesn't give a damn about human suffering, and so will do whatever is required to make things go his way.

Personality: Stoic.

Current Status: In pursuit of the Blue Rose, more or less.

The Lady of the Lake is a Winter Fae assigned to helping the Count find the Blue Rose. However, she is about as mindlessly elemental as they get - her schtick is water and decay, and she is into it religiously. This mostly means she really likes drowning people, to the point that it is sort of weird.

Personality: Creepy.

Current Status: Theoretically in pursuit of the Blue Rose.

The Frost is a pixie serving the Winter Court. Not much is known about him, besides the fact that he was involved in the old Winter Queen's assassination, and also that the Ringmaster hates him. He was stalking the carnival for over a year at the request of the new Winter Queen, but has since been shaken off.

Personality: Laughing.

Current Status: Stalking the carnival.

The Starlight is a fortune telling Summer Fae and ally of the carnival. She is currently responsible for warding some of the faeblooded members against the eyes of the Courts, and also writes people cryptic letters about their destinies. Like most of the Summer Fae who follow the Summer Maiden, she is pretty nice and helpful.

Personality: Cool.

Current Status: Living in the Summerlands.
